## How to read these dates

These are tabular Hijri dates, computed arithmetically from the standard civil Hijri calendar, which assumes a fixed pattern of 29- and 30-day months. They are the right dates for planning ahead and are what most calendar applications show.

An announced date can differ by a day in either direction, because most authorities begin a month on an actual sighting of the new crescent, which depends on the moon's age at sunset, the weather, the observer's latitude and the criteria that authority applies. For Ramadan, the two Eids and the Day of Arafah, follow the announcement of the authority you observe with.

A Hijri year is twelve lunar months — about 354 days, some eleven shorter than the Gregorian year. There is no leap month, so the calendar makes no attempt to stay aligned with the solar year.
