# Surah Al-'Alaq (العلق)

Surah Al-'Alaq (العلق, "The Clot") is chapter 96 of the Quran and contains 19 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed 1th of the 114. It appears in juz 30, on pages 597–597 of the standard mushaf, divided into 1 rukus.

## Text

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

**96:1** ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

> Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,

**96:2** خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

> Createth man from a clot.

**96:3** ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

> Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,

**96:4** ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

> Who teacheth by the pen,

**96:5** عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

> Teacheth man that which he knew not.

**96:6** كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

> Nay, but verily man is rebellious

**96:7** أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

> That he thinketh himself independent!

**96:8** إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

> Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.

**96:9** أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

> Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth

**96:10** عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

> A slave when he prayeth?

**96:11** أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

> Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)

**96:12** أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

> Or enjoineth piety?

**96:13** أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

> Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?

**96:14** أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

> Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?

**96:15** كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

> Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -

**96:16** نَاصِيَةٍ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

> The lying, sinful forelock -

**96:17** فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

> Then let him call upon his henchmen!

**96:18** سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

> We will call the guards of hell.

**96:19** كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب

> Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
