# Surah Al-Fajr (الفجر)

Surah Al-Fajr (الفجر, "The Dawn") is chapter 89 of the Quran and contains 30 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed 10th of the 114. It appears in juz 30, on pages 593–594 of the standard mushaf, divided into 1 rukus.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

**89:1** وَٱلْفَجْرِ

> By the Dawn

**89:2** وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

> And ten nights,

**89:3** وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ

> And the Even and the Odd,

**89:4** وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

> And the night when it departeth,

**89:5** هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ

> There surely is an oath for thinking man.

**89:6** أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

> Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,

**89:7** إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ

> With many-columned Iram,

**89:8** ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ

> The like of which was not created in the lands;

**89:9** وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ

> And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;

**89:10** وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ

> And with Pharaoh, firm of might,

**89:11** ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ

> Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,

**89:12** فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ

> And multiplied iniquity therein?

**89:13** فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

> Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.

**89:14** إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ

> Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.

**89:15** فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ

> As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.

**89:16** وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ

> But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.

**89:17** كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ

> Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan

**89:18** وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ

> And urge not on the feeding of the poor.

**89:19** وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

> And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.

**89:20** وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

> And love wealth with abounding love.

**89:21** كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

> Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,

**89:22** وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

> And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,

**89:23** وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

> And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?

**89:24** يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى

> He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!

**89:25** فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

> None punisheth as He will punish on that day!

**89:26** وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

> None bindeth as He then will bind.

**89:27** يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

> But ah! thou soul at peace!

**89:28** ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

> Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!

**89:29** فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَٰدِى

> Enter thou among My bondmen!

**89:30** وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى

> Enter thou My Garden!
