# Surah Al-Mutaffifin (المطففين)

Surah Al-Mutaffifin (المطففين, "Defrauding") is chapter 83 of the Quran and contains 36 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed 86th of the 114. It appears in juz 30, on pages 587–589 of the standard mushaf, divided into 1 rukus.

## Text

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

**83:1** وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ

> Woe unto the defrauders:

**83:2** ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ

> Those who when they take the measure from mankind demand it full,

**83:3** وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ

> But if they measure unto them or weight for them, they cause them loss.

**83:4** أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ

> Do such (men) not consider that they will be raised again

**83:5** لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

> Unto an Awful Day,

**83:6** يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

> The day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds?

**83:7** كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ

> Nay, but the record of the vile is in Sijjin -

**83:8** وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ

> Ah! what will convey unto thee what Sijjin is! -

**83:9** كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

> A written record.

**83:10** وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

> Woe unto the repudiators on that day!

**83:11** ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

> Those who deny the Day of Judgment

**83:12** وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

> Which none denieth save each criminal transgressor,

**83:13** إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

> Who, when thou readest unto him Our revelations, saith: (Mere) fables of the men of old.

**83:14** كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

> Nay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts.

**83:15** كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ

> Nay, but surely on that day they will be covered from (the mercy of) their Lord.

**83:16** ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

> Then lo! they verily will burn in hell,

**83:17** ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ

> And it will be said (unto them): This is that which ye used to deny.

**83:18** كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ

> Nay, but the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin -

**83:19** وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ

> Ah, what will convey unto thee what 'Illiyin is! -

**83:20** كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

> A written record,

**83:21** يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ

> Attested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord).

**83:22** إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ

> Lo! the righteous verily are in delight,

**83:23** عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ

> On couches, gazing,

**83:24** تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

> Thou wilt know in their faces the radiance of delight.

**83:25** يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ

> They are given to drink of a pure wine, sealed,

**83:26** خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ

> Whose seal is musk - for this let (all) those strive who strive for bliss -

**83:27** وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ

> And mixed with water of Tasnim,

**83:28** عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ

> A spring whence those brought near (to Allah) drink.

**83:29** إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ

> Lo! the guilty used to laugh at those who believed,

**83:30** وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ

> And wink one to another when they passed them;

**83:31** وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ

> And when they returned to their own folk, they returned jesting;

**83:32** وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ

> And when they saw them they said: Lo! these have gone astray.

**83:33** وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَٰفِظِينَ

> Yet they were not sent as guardians over them.

**83:34** فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ

> This day it is those who believe who have the laugh of disbelievers,

**83:35** عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ

> On high couches, gazing.

**83:36** هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ

> Are not the disbelievers paid for what they used to do?
