# Surah An-Naba (النبإ)

Surah An-Naba (النبإ, "The Announcement") is chapter 78 of the Quran and contains 40 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed 80th of the 114. It appears in juz 30, on pages 582–583 of the standard mushaf, divided into 2 rukus.

## Text

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

**78:1** عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

> Whereof do they question one another?

**78:2** عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

> (It is) of the awful tidings,

**78:3** ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

> Concerning which they are in disagreement.

**78:4** كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

> Nay, but they will come to know!

**78:5** ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

> Nay, again, but they will come to know!

**78:6** أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَٰدًا

> Have We not made the earth an expanse,

**78:7** وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

> And the high hills bulwarks?

**78:8** وَخَلَقْنَٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا

> And We have created you in pairs,

**78:9** وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

> And have appointed your sleep for repose,

**78:10** وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا

> And have appointed the night as a cloak,

**78:11** وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا

> And have appointed the day for livelihood.

**78:12** وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

> And We have built above you seven strong (heavens),

**78:13** وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

> And have appointed a dazzling lamp,

**78:14** وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا

> And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water,

**78:15** لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا

> Thereby to produce grain and plant,

**78:16** وَجَنَّٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا

> And gardens of thick foliage.

**78:17** إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَٰتًا

> Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time,

**78:18** يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا

> A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes,

**78:19** وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًا

> And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates,

**78:20** وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

> And the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage.

**78:21** إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

> Lo! hell lurketh in ambush,

**78:22** لِّلطَّٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا

> A home for the rebellious.

**78:23** لَّٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا

> They will abide therein for ages.

**78:24** لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

> Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink

**78:25** إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

> Save boiling water and a paralysing cold:

**78:26** جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا

> Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds).

**78:27** إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

> For lo! they looked not for a reckoning;

**78:28** وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا

> They called Our revelations false with strong denial.

**78:29** وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَٰهُ كِتَٰبًا

> Everything have We recorded in a Book.

**78:30** فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

> So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.

**78:31** إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

> Lo! for the duteous is achievement -

**78:32** حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَٰبًا

> Gardens enclosed and vineyards,

**78:33** وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

> And voluptuous women of equal age;

**78:34** وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا

> And a full cup.

**78:35** لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا

> There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying -

**78:36** جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا

> Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment -

**78:37** رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

> Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.

**78:38** يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

> On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.

**78:39** ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا

> That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.

**78:40** إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا

> Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"
