## Common questions

**How many hizb are in the Quran?**

60. There are two in each of the 30 juz, and each hizb is split into four quarters, so the mushaf has 240 quarter-hizb marks in all.

**How many hizb are in one juz?**

Two. Each juz begins with an odd-numbered hizb — juz 1 with hizb 1, juz 2 with hizb 3 — and the even-numbered hizb starts halfway through it.

**What is rub al-hizb?**

Rub‘ al-hizb means "a quarter of a hizb". Each hizb is divided into four, so a quarter is an eighth of a juz.

**What does the ۞ symbol in the Quran mean?**

It is the rub el-hizb sign. In the mushaf it marks where a quarter-hizb begins, alongside the juz and hizb numbers in the margin. It is a reader's division marker, like a chapter-section mark, and it is encoded in Unicode as U+06DE ARABIC START OF RUB EL HIZB.

**Where does hizb 1 start and end?**

Hizb 1 begins at Al-Fatihah 1:1 and ends at Al-Baqarah 2:74. Its four quarters start at Al-Fatihah 1:1, Al-Baqarah 2:26, Al-Baqarah 2:44, Al-Baqarah 2:60.
