The surahs in order of revelation

The surahs are not arranged chronologically in the mushaf. In the traditional order of revelation the Quran begins with Al-'Alaq and ends with An-Nasr, and all 86 Meccan surahs come before the 28 Medinan ones. The table lists all 114 in that order, with each surah’s number in the mushaf beside it.

Where this order comes from

No chronology of the surahs is given in the Quran itself. This one is the traditional order printed in the 1924 Cairo edition of the mushaf, reproduced in the Tanzil data this site is built on, and it is the order most Quran references quote. It is a reconstruction from reports about individual surahs, and other chronologies, classical and modern, place some surahs differently — so a surah’s number here is best read as its place in this list rather than as a date. Many surahs were also revealed in parts over time, which a single number cannot show.

What is the chronological order of the Quran?

It is the order in which the surahs are traditionally held to have been revealed, as opposed to their order in the mushaf. In the chronology used here the first five are Al-'Alaq, Al-Qalam, Al-Muzzammil, Al-Muddaththir and Al-Fatihah, and the last is An-Nasr. The full list of 114 is on this page.

Which surah is first in the order of revelation?

Al-'Alaq, surah 96 in the mushaf, is first in this chronology, and An-Nasr, surah 110, is last.

How many surahs are Meccan and how many Medinan?

86 are Meccan and 28 Medinan. In this chronology all 86 Meccan surahs come first; the first Medinan surah is Al-Baqarah, at number 87.

Where is Al-Fatihah in the order of revelation?

Fifth. Al-Fatihah opens the mushaf but is number 5 in this chronology, after Al-'Alaq, Al-Qalam, Al-Muzzammil, Al-Muddaththir.

Is this the only chronology?
