The text used on this site marks 556 rukus — sections of a surah, signalled in the margin of many printings by the letter ع. The tables give the count in every para and every surah. Other printings place a few signs differently, so totals of 540 and 558 are also quoted.

Why the totals differ

The ruku signs are not part of the text as it was first written down: they were added later as reading aids, which is why printings disagree about a handful of them and why a reference book may say 540 or 558 where this table says 556. The verses themselves are the same in all of them. If your mushaf numbers its rukus differently, the per-surah counts above are the quickest way to see where.
